Why is the difference between information technology and information systems important?

A
  • information technology refers to the products, methods, inventions, and standards that are used for the purpose of producing information. IT pertains to the hardware, software, and data components. In contract, an information system is an assembly of hardware, software, data, procedures, and people that produce information.
  • You can buy IT, but you cannot buy IS

Technology:

  • linking data about your every day life to a data collection system, such as a your heart rate, blood pressure, body mass index.
  • You may get picked up by 911 staff when your pacemaker sends information to the hospital saying that you are having a heartattack.
  • textbooks will be all electronic, allowing for the cost to be reduced from 140 to 40
  • Dell might be a loser if the continue to only be producers of computers.
  • Microsoft might be a loser if they cant figure out the surface problem
  • traditional schools benefits will not outweigh the costs to attend in most cases
