Identity
A condition where people feel a sense of similarity or sameness with others of their religion, race, ethnicity.
What can strengthen the feeling of identity?
Symbols. Maple leaf - for Canadians. Star of David for Jewish people.
What helps to develop identity?
Shared history, language, or an effort to ensure the traditions associated with a group are passed through generations.
What shapes identity?
context
Identity is shaped by context. What is context?
Circumstances or surrounding such as language, tradition and history.
What will dictate how you respond to various situations?
Context. Therefore, you will take on a different role model in different contexts.
What is tradition?
The customs of a family or culture.
How are traditions maintained in larger society?
It can be maintained through government or annual celebrations in a community.
What is a source of identity related to beliefs?
Religion or spirituality is a major source of identity as members of a country often share the same religious/spiritual beliefs and …. the same rituals associated with it.
What is a source of identity related to expression?
The arts. They shape identity through music, dance and artistic expression. Different styles of music or dance can be recognized by many people to a specific group or nationality.
Does attire shape identity? How?
Yes. It can change over time but many communities/nationality have traditional attire. It shapes identity by making people of a country ‘identifiable’ to others. Sometimes it’s worn all the time, or only at special events.
A lifestyle is closely tied to the land and ecosystem in which people live. What is this?
Relationship to the land. It helps to express and identity.
How does the relationship to the land create a sense of community?
There’s a shared knowledge of how to live in the same region and they have similar needs. example: Northern communities have different hosing, transportation, entertainment than those who live in tropical areas.
What are ideological beliefs?
Beliefs about gender roles, government types are beliefs that affect society and are ways identity can be expressed.
Different cultures or religions often have different ideological beliefs that can define a group. What can these differences do sometimes?
Cause conflict.
