Chapter 1 - Intro to Airmanship Flashcards
How is airmanship learnt?
Experience
Feedback and reflection (debriefs)
Learning from others (case studies, instructors, etc)
Understanding the theory behind airmanship
What is the military definition of airmanship?
A level of knowledge and skills that is desired and essential to one who aspires to operate safely within such environments.
What is flight safety a combination of?
Technical skill
Knowledge of the aircraft and its equipment
Knowledge of surroundings
Knowledge of procedures
Behaviours and mental attitudes
Knowledge of your own capabilities
What does the term ‘cognitive skills’ relate to?
Perception
Memory
Judgement
Reasoning
What is memory divided into?
Long term
Short term
What is long term memory divided into?
Semantic memory
Motor memory/mechanical skills
Episodic memory
What is semantic memory?
Facts, rules and information.
E.g. checks, emergency drills, technical data, etc
What is motor memory/mechanical skills?
Accessed subconsciously, e.g. aircraft handling
What is episodic memory?
Perception of specific events, e.g. first solo, inflight emergencies, etc
What is short term memory?
Smaller capacity for conscious use.
Temporary processing space for:
- Data from the senses
- Data retrieved from long term memory, e.g. regularly used RT frequencies
This is the ‘space’ of your mental capacity.
What is the equation used to represent perception?
Perception = Knowledge + Contextual experience
What are the stages of the decision making process?
Perception, Recognition, Analysis, Decision, Action
Note - Begins with perception, if a situation is not correctly perceived then the subsequent decision making and action will not be correct.
Perception is critical to the airmanship process.
What comprises the RAPDA(R) decision making loop?
- Recognise
- Analyse
- Prioritise
- Decide
- Act
- Review (restarts the loop if required)
What are the elements of the RAF airmanship model?
Situational Awareness
Decisiveness
Communication
Resource Management
Mental Performance
Spare Mental Capacity
What are the two types of situational awareness?
Positional
Tactical
Note - SA is about facts, knowing them, understanding their significance and planning ahead with them.
