psychoactive drugs
drugs that affect feelings, thoughts, perceptions, or behaviour.
illicit (illegal) drugs
drugs whose manufacture, sale, or possession is illegal. (ex: heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, LSD, ketamine.)
licit (legal) drugs
drugs whose manufacture, sale, or possession is legal. (ex: alcohol, nicotine, cannabis.) minimum age requirement.
drug dependence
condition in which person feels a compulsive need to continue taking a drug. in the process, the drug assumes an increasingly central role in person’s life. bio, psych, and soci factors.
drug
chemical substance that, when taken into body, alters structure or functioning of body in some way excluding those nutrients considered to be related to normal functioning (so not food and water.)
instrumental use
taking drug for specific purpose other than recreational use (ex: stay awake, fall asleep, pain relief.) may be legal or illegal.
recreational use
taking a drug only to get high or achieve pleasurable results. may be legal or illegal.
drug misuse
prescription or over-the-counter medication is used inappropriately (ex: take too much/too little, mix with other drugs, share with friends and family.)
shamanism
philosophy and practice of healing in which diagnosis or treatment is based on trancelike states, on the part of either the healer (shaman) or the patient. trances often induced by hallucinogenic drugs.
ebers papyrus
egyptian document dated approximately 1500 BCE containing more than 800 prescriptions for common ailments & diseases.
placebo effect
any change in person’s condition after taking a drug, based solely on their beliefs about the drug rather than on physical effects of the drug.
patent medicine
historically, drug or combination of drugs sold through peddlers, shops, or mail-order advertisements.
chlorpromazine
antipsychotic drug that was one of the first pharmaceutical treatments for schizophrenia.
neuroscience
interdisciplinary branch of science dedicated to the study of the nervous system.
