extended family
family that includes relatives beyond the immediate family. (grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins).
polyamorous relationships
consensual, transparent intimate relationships of more than two adults.
living apart together (LAT)
the practice of being in a relationship but maintaining separate residences. may be due to geographical distance or other reasons.
transnational families
families in which one or more family members live in another country for an extended period of time.
skip-generation families
families in which children are raised by their grandparent(s) because the parents are not living with the children. aka grandfamilies.
co-parenting agreements
agreements made between two or more individuals who are not in an intimate relationship but would like to raise a child together.
social reproduction
the labour of families, including physical, mental, and emotional labour.
family-process definitions
definitions of families that focus on what they achieve.
kin-keeper
the family member who maintains and nurtures family contacts.
kinship group
a set of people who share a relationship though blood or marriage and who have positions in a hierarchy of rights over property.
patrilineal
kinship through the male line.
matrilineal
kinship through the female line.
bilateral kinship systems
kinship through both male and female lines.
nuclear family
a family group that consists only of (heterosexual and cisgender) spouses or of spouses and their children.
free-range kids
children raised with minimal parental supervision and allowed to be independent.
