Management Styles
Autocratic Management Style
Involves a manager making decisions and directing employees without any input from them
Used when:
- Lack of time
- Inexperienced employees
Pro:
- Decisions made quickly + experienced
- Clear comms (improve productivity)
Con:
- No input from employees, result in low moral
- Smaller pool of ideas
Persuasive Management Style
Involves a manager making decisions and communicating the reasons for those decisions to employees without their input
Used when:
- Lack of time
- Inexperienced employees
Pro:
- Quick decisions, support from employees
- Clear comms
Cons:
- No input, low moral/motivation, no development
- Small pool of ideas
Consultative Management Style
Involves a manager seeking input from employees on business decisions but making the final decision themselves
Used when:
- Tasks more complex
- More time
- Experienced
Pro:
- Larger pool of ideas
- Increase motivation
Con:
- Time-consuming
- May feel undervalued if idea is overlooked
Participative Management Style
Involves a manager sharing information with employees so that employees can participate in decision-making
Used when:
- More complex tasks
- Ample time
- High experienced
Pro:
- Employees feel trusted and valued, improve moral
- Improve decisions, more experience
Cons:
- Time consuming
- Conflicat may arise
Laissez-Faire Management Style
Involves a manager communicating business objectives to employees and giving them the freedom to make decisions independently
Used when:
- Highly experienced
- Heaps of time
Pro:
- Comms improved
- Encourage moral, team work and creativity
Cons:
- Lead to loss of management control
- Producitivty declines (misuse of resources), increase conflict
