Atlantic world
The relationship between Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
The Renaissance
The rebirth of European culture and life. Europe goes big brain time.
Joint-stock corporation
A business corporation that amassed capital through sales of stock to investors.
Protestant Reformation
Martin Luther and his cohorts’ revolt against papal authority and the perceived corruption of the Catholic Church.
The Counter-reformation
The stately of torture and forced conversion enacted by the catholic monarchs of Europe against protestants during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Church of England
A church created to give the Monarch of England primacy over religious matters within their realm.
Puritans
Extreme Protestants who went by a literal interpretation of the Bible and advocated for a purification of the catholic and Anglican churches.
Kongo
A kingdom in Africa which was the origin of a lot of American slaves. Raided and conquered by European slavers.
New slavery
This term, as opposed to the “normal” slavery of the ancient world, describes slavery which dehumanized and discriminated against black Africans.
Treaty of Tordesillas
This treaty drew a line in the mid-Atlantic which divided Portugal and Spain’s colonial holdings in the americas.
Conquistador
The term for European adventurers who subjugated and converted the americas.
Encomienda System
A system created by Spain which exploited labor and tribute from the native peoples of South America
Columbian exchange
The exchange of goods, peoples, religions, and ideas that took place between the Atlantic continents.
