Chapter 1 Flashcards
Biology
The scientific study of life
Domains
Three higher levels of life
Emergent Properties
Life emerging
Properties of Life
order, reproduction, growth and development, energy processing, response to environment, regulation, adaptation.
Molecule
- A cluster of small chemical units called atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Organelle
- An enclosed structure that performs a specific function within a cell.
Cell
- Fundamental unit of life
Tissues
- A group of similar cells that perform a specific function.
Organ
- Made up of several different tissues.
Organ System
- Consists of several different organs that cooperate in a specific function.
Organism
- An individual living thing.
Population
- All the individuals of a particular species living in an area.
Community
- Entire array of organisms in an ecosystem
Ecosystem
- All organisms living in a particular area.
Biosphere
- The regions of the surface atmosphere and hydrosphere of the earth occupied by living organisms.
Three Domains
Archaea, Bacteria, Eukarya
What are the four kingdoms in eukarya?
Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia
Prokaryotic cells?
were the first to evolve, are simpler, and are usually smaller than eukaryotic cells.
Eukaryotic Cells?
are found in plants, animals, fungi, and protists and are subdivided by membranes into various functional compartments, or organelles, including a nucleus that houses the DNA.
