Biotech Flashcards
What is a karyotype?
A visual, ordered display of all the chromosomes from one somatic cell
How is a karyotype made?
By taking pictures of chromosomes arranged by size, banding pattern, and centromere position.
What kind of mutations can karyotypes detect?
Chromosomal mutations and genetic disorders
What is nondisjunction?
Lack of correct chromosomal separation
What are the potential results of nondisjunction?
Disorders, miscarriage, possibility of death
What chromosome number would be found in gametes if nondisjunction occurs in Meiosis I?
22 and 24
What chromosome number would be found in gametes if nondisjunction occurs in Meiosis II?
22, 23, 24
Monosomy
2n-1
Trisomy
2n + 1
Which chromosome determines the sex of the baby?
X and Y chromosomes
Down syndrome
Extra copy of chromosome 21
Klinefelter
Extra X
Turner
Monosomy
What is colchicine?
A drug that inhibits microtubule formation
Why is colchicine used in the karyotype?
Freezes the chromosomes in Metaphase I because they are clearly visualized.
