Q

Explain how Protestant Christian schools were established in Venezuela and Florida and what happened to these schools.

A

Churches and Christian schools were established by Lutherans in Venezuela and remained for more than four centuries. In Florida many Christian schools were established. However, many of the people in these colonies were killed by the Spanish because they were not Catholic. The Spanish explores were more concerned with gaining riches for their nation than religious freedom and education.

Q

Explain the Church of England’s attempt to establish schools for Native Americans and whether that attempt was successful.

A

The Church of England was not concerned with educating the colonists. Because of its Catholic Roots, leaders of the Church of England viewed education as heresy. They did not want the common people to become too educated and begin questioning the leadership. They were very interested in educating the Native Americans, mainly so they could convert them to their own religion. However, after much fundraising, the attempt at education was a failure. Some funds were mismanaged and supplies were lost at sea. A larger contributing factor to the failed attempt was the Indian massacre of 1622.
