Anything that interferes with the transmission and reception of a message
External noise
Factors outside the receiver that make it difficult to hear like loud music
Physiological noise
Biological factors in the receiver that interfere with accurate reception like hearing loss
Psychological noise
Cognitive factors that make communication less effective like becoming irritable and having trouble listening to the rest of the message
Channel
Medium where messages are exchanged
Mediated communication
Sending messages through technological channels
Content dimension
Information being explicitly discussed
Relational dimension
Expresses how you feel about the other person
Interpersonal communication
Interaction distinguished by the qualities of uniqueness interdependence self disclosure and intrinsic rewards
Masspersonal communication
Characterizes interaction that crosses boundaries between mass and interpersonal contexts
Communication competence
Ability to achieve goals in a matter both effective and appropriate
Adaptability
Selecting appropriate responses for each situation and for each recipient known as the hallmark of interpersonal communication skills
Cognitive complexity
Ability to construct a variety of different frameworks for viewing an issue
Self monitoring
Describe the process of paying close attention to one’s own behavior and using these observations to shape it
Social media
The term that describes all the communication channels that allow community
Richness
The abundance of nonverbal cues that add clarity to a verbal message
Leanness
Messages that carry less information due to a lack of nonverbal cues
Hyperpersonal communication
Accelerating the discussion of personal topics and relational development beyond what normally happens face to face
Asynchronous communication
Time gap between message being sent and received
Synchronous communication
2 way communication occurring in real time
Disinhibition
Tendency to transmit messages without considering their consequences
Multimodality
Ability and willingness to use multiple channels of communication

The ability to understand and manage one’s own emotions and to be sensitive to other’s feelings
