Anything that interferes with the transmission and reception of a message
External noise
Factors outside the receiver that make it difficult to hear like loud music
Physiological noise
Biological factors in the receiver that interfere with accurate reception like hearing loss

Cognitive factors that make communication less effective like becoming irritable and having trouble listening to the rest of the message
Channel
Medium where messages are exchanged
Mediated communication
Sending messages through technological channels
Content dimension
Information being explicitly discussed
Relational dimension
Expresses how you feel about the other person
Interpersonal communication
Interaction distinguished by the qualities of uniqueness interdependence self disclosure and intrinsic rewards
Masspersonal communication
Characterizes interaction that crosses boundaries between mass and interpersonal contexts
Communication competence
Ability to achieve goals in a matter both effective and appropriate
