Definition of conflict (all 5 elements)
Definitional element of conflict - definition of conflict (Do not answer with conflict styles, just vocabulary)
1. An Expressed Struggle - the communication that makes up the conflict
2. An Interdependence - choices that affect other people
3. Perceived Incompatible Goals - out of touch with needs
4. Perceived Scarce Resources - fighting over the same guy
5. Interference - person interferes with the desired action
Creating a Supportive vs Defensive Climate (p. 25 in 9th Edition)
- Evaluation use Description = Describe issue not the person
- Control use Problem Solving = Focus on problem not control
- Strategy use Spontaneity = No manipulating, just be in the moment
- Neutrality use Empathy = Don’t be a matter of fact, care
- Superiority use Equality = Don’t talk down, treat like equal
- Certainty use Provisionalism = Don’t be inflexible, be open
Escalatory Spirals
I do or say something bad, you escalate and then I escalate and it’s a destructive conflict style tool. Instead of solving the issue we just keep making it worse. Escalate out of control.
