Chapt 4 Genetics Flashcards
Chromosome
Threads of DNA found in the nucleus of a cell, Genes are found along the strands, Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes
Gene
Units of inheritance
Homozygous
Inheritance of like genes at a chromosomal locus
Dosage
Stronger expression due to homozygous state of inheritance
Meiosis
Cell division producing gametes (egg & sperm), cells containing a haploid # of 23 chromosomes
Linkage
Genes are linked together on a chromosome
Dominant trait
A gene product that is expressed to the exclusion of the expression of its allele, these traits are expressed in both homozygous & heterozygous states
Co-Dominant Traits
Equal expression of 2 different inherited alleles, most blood group genes produce co-dominant traits
Alleles
Alternate forms of a gene that may be present at a single chromosome locus
Phenotype
Observable expression of inherited traits
Sex chromosomes
X/Y chromosomes that determine sex, Males=XY, Females=XX
Locus
Site of a gene on a chromosome
Heterozygous
Inheritance of 2 different alleles at a given locus
Crossing over
Exchange of genetic material during meiosis between paired chromosomes, resulting in a recombination of genetic information on these chromosomes
Mitosis
Cell division that results in diploid # (23 pairs) of chromosomes, all cells except sex cells (egg & sperm) undergo mitosis
