Chapt 11 Other Blood Group Systems Flashcards
Donath-Landsteiner test
test designed to identify the biphasic antibody in paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, the sample is kept warm after collection, cooled, & then returned to 37 degrees C, hemolysis in the test but not in the control is considered a positive test
high-incidence antigens antigen
antigen occurring in a large percentage of the population
high titer, low avidity antibody
an antibody that is present to a high dilution, but the strength of reaction is not higher at lower dilutions than at higher dilutions, for example, an antibody that shows agglutination with RBCs at a dilution of 1:512, but the reaction strength of all tubes is only 1+
low-incidence antigen
an antigen that occurs in a low number of people in a population, usually less than 10%
sialoglycoprotein
combination of sialic acid glycoprotein (which is, itself, a combination of sugar & protein)
silent allele
an allele that does not produce a detectable product
