Chapt 3 Blood Components Flashcards
additive solution
solution used to extend the shelf life of packed red cells, contains; adenine, dextrose, & other nutritional components, current systems extend the dating period to 42 days
anticoagulant
substance used to prevent the coagulation (clotting) of blood
blood component
blood product; platelets, plasma, cryoprecipitate, granulocytes…
closed system
system that allows manipulation of a product without exposing it to air
deglycerolization
process of removal of glycerol from previously frozen red cells; involves thawing & washing with various solutions
2,3-diphosphoglycerate (2,3-DPG)
organic phosphate in RBCs that alters the affinity of hemoglobin for o2, levels of 2,3-DPG decrease as blood is stored, & the hemoglobin therefore has greater affinity for the o2, once RBCs are transfused, the level of 2,3-DPG is returned to normal
Graft-versus-host-disease
GVHD- condition in which transfused immunocompetent cells engraft in the recipient & begin to mount response against the recipients tissues
irradiation of blood products
exposure of blood products to gamma irradiation to prevent GVHD, the irradiation inactivates lymphocytes that could engraft in the host & cause GVHD
open system
exposed to the air
rejuvenation
process of adding a solution containing adenine, inosine, pyruvate, & other compounds to RBCs nearing the end of their shelf life to transfuse the cells immediately or freeze them for later use, the addition of the solution increases levels of 2,3 -DPG, adenosine triphosphate, or both
sterile connecting device
(sterile tube welder) device that allows tubing to be separated & joined with other tubing without exposure to bacterial contamination, such devices can allow entry into a blood bag without exposure to the air, which requires a change in expiration time
