Chap 19 Flashcards
What is the transportation function of blood?
Blood transports nutrients, waste products, oxygen, and heat to regulate body temperature.
What is plasma?
Plasma is the liquid portion of blood (~55%), containing water, electrolytes, nutrients, hormones, and plasma proteins.
What are the formed elements of blood?
Formed elements include red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets.
What is fibrinogen?
Fibrinogen is a plasma protein produced by the liver that converts to fibrin during blood clotting to form a stable clot.
What substances are needed for blood clotting?
Substances needed for blood clotting include platelets, calcium ions, clotting factors, and vitamin K.
What is fibrinolysis?
Fibrinolysis is the process of breaking down a clot, where plasminogen is activated into plasmin to dissolve fibrin.
What are ABO blood types?
ABO blood types (A, B, AB, O) depend on the presence or absence of antigens on red blood cells.
What is the universal donor blood type?
The universal donor blood type is O negative.
What is the universal recipient blood type?
The universal recipient blood type is AB positive.
What are macrophages?
Macrophages are mature monocytes that move into tissues and phagocytose pathogens, dead cells, and debris.
