Chap 1 (seg 2) Flashcards
Abnormal Behavior also known as?
maladaptive or maladjusted behavior
A group of behaviors that is DEVIANT FROM SOCIAL EXPECTATION because they go against the norms or standard behavior of society
Abnormal Behavior
focuses on the PATTERN OF EMOTION, thought, and behavior
that can be signs of a mental health condition. Rather than the distinction between normal and abnormal, psychologists in this field focus on the level of distress that behaviors, thoughts, or emotions might cause
Abnormal psychology
is the scientific STUDY OF MENTAL DISORDER , including efforts to understand their genetic, biological, psychological, and social causes
Psychopathology
Identification of Abnormal Behavior:
- Deviation from Statistical Norm
- Deviation from Social Norm
- Maladaptive Behavior
- Personal Distress
- Failure to Function Adequately
- Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
Many population facts are MEASURED SUCH AS HEIGHT, weight and intelligence
Deviation from Statistical Norm
Most of the people fall within the MIDDLE RANGE OF INTELLIGENCE, but a few are abnormally stupid
Deviation from Statistical Norm
Every CULTURE HAS CERTAIN STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTABLE BEHAVIOR; behavior that deviates from the standard is considered to be abnormal
behavior
Deviation from Social Norm
It can result when a person just does NOT SEE A PATH TO THEIR DESIRED FUTURE
Maladaptive Behavior
This can happen with any CHRONIC ILLNESS OR MAJOR LIFESTYLE CHANGE
Maladaptive Behavior
Maladaptive behaviors like these can become a self-destructive pattern:
- Passive-aggressiveness
- Withdrawal
- Self-Harm
This is when you EXPRESS NEGATIVE FEELINGS INDIRECTLY
rather than head-on
Passive-aggressiveness
When avoidance is your go-to strategy, you’re EFFECTIVELY WITHDRAWING from social interaction
Withdrawal
Some people deal with stressful events by HURTING THEMSELVES,
Self-Harm
The fourth criterion considers abnormality in terms of the
INDIVIDUAL SUBJECTIVE FEELINGS, personal distress, rather than his behavior.
Personal Distress
Most people commonly diagnosed as `mentally ill’’ feel miserable, anxious, depressed and may suffer from INSOMIA
Personal Distress
a person is considered abnormal if they are UNABLE TO COPE
WITH THE DEMANDS OF EVERYDAY LIFE
Failure to Function Adequately
They may be UNABLE TO PERFORM the behaviors necessary for day – to – day living
Failure to Function Adequately
Under this definition, rather than defining
what is abnormal, we DEFINE WHAT NORMAL/IDEAL is and anything that deviates from this is regarded as abnormal
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
This requires us to decide on the characteristics we
CONSIDER NECESSARY TO MENTAL HEALTH
Deviation from Ideal Mental Health
Symptoms of Abnormal Behavior:
- Long Periods of Discomfort
- Impaired Functioning
- Bizarre Behavior
- Disruptive Behavior
This could be anything as simple as worrying about
a calculus test or GRIEVING THE DEATH OF A LOVED ONE.
Long Periods of Discomfort
When such distressing feelings, however, persist for an EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME and seem to be unrelated to events surrounding the person, they would be considered abnormal and could suggest a psychological disorder.
Long Periods of Discomfort
a distinction must be made between simply a passing PERIOD OF INEFFICIENCY AND PROLONGED INEFFICIENCY which seems unexplainable
Impaired Functioning
that has NO RATIONAL BASIS seems to indicate
that the individual is confused.
Bizarre Behavior
means impulsive, APPARENTLY UNCONTROLLABLE BEHAVIOR that disrupts the lives of others or deprives them of their human rights on a regular basis
Disruptive Behavior
This type of behavior is characteristic of a SEVERE PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDER
