Chambers of the heart Flashcards
What are the names of the two types of circulation?
Systemic and pulmonary
What drains into the right atrium?
Superior and inferior vena cava and the coronary sinus.
What is the function of the right auricle/right atrial appendage?
To increase the capacity of the right atrial.
Where is the crista appendis found and what does it represent?
Found on the right atrium. It’s a muscular ridge that seperates two parts of the atrium with distinct embryological origins.
What are the two areas of the right atrium are separates by the crista terminalis?
Sinus venarum- posterior to the CT, receives blood from both vena cava. Smooth walls.
Atrium proper- anterior to CT, includes right auricle. Has rough muscular walls.
What is the name of the wall between the right and left atria?
Interatrial septum
What oval shaped depression is on the inner surface of the right atrium? What is it a remnant of?
Fossa ovalis. Remnant of the foraman ovale in foetal heart
What was the function of the foramen ovale in the foetal heart?
Shunting of blood from the right to left atria to bypass the pulmonary system in the foetus.
Closes at first breath.
What is the name of the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle?
Mitral/bicuspid valve.
Where are pectinate muscles found and what are their function?
The atria. They allow for stronger muscle contraction.
What are the two areas of the left atrium and what are they derived from?
Inflow portion- smooth surface, derived from pulmonary veins
Outflow portion- derived from embryonic atrium, contains pectinate muscles. Left auricle found here
What valve is between the right atrium and ventricle?
Tricuspid valve
What is the name of the ridge dividing the right ventricle into the inflow and outflow portions?
Supraventricular crest
What’s the general name of the irregular muscle elevations found the the ventricles of the heart?
Trabeculae carneae
What tendon like structure are the papillary muscles attached to?
Chordae tendoneae
