Developed as the national distribution centre for raw cotton and spun yarn
Impacts of deindustrialisation in Manchester
Crime rates rose from 77 (1900) to 856 (2001)
Sex offences rose from 1,723 (1900) to 49,581 (2001)
Criminal damage rose from 500 to 1 million approx
Unemployment - city lost 50,000 jobs
Unemployment was at 19%
Population declined by 17.5%
Dereliction - huge areas have been regenerated to cope with the increasing population
Causes of de-industrialisation (Manchester)
1912- British industry was at its peak
1993- demand for cotton in Britain slumped
Japan introduced 24h cotton production and became the largest cotton manufacturer in the world
