Rehabilitation
The process of helping a person with a disability return to their highest level function
Restorative care
How a patient’s rehabilitation is achieved
1-Acute phase
2-Subacute phase
3-Chronic phase
Acute phase (First phase)
Occurs in first 24 hours after serious illness, injury, surgery.
Patient needs constant care/observing.
Main focus=Keep person alive.
Subacute phase (Second phase)
Lasts about a week.
Main focus=Stabilize patient’s medical condition.
Chronic phase (Third phase)
Intense work of rehabilitation begins.
Rehab team makes program for restorative care and rehabilitation that suits patient.
Physical rehabilitation
Focus on helping patient regain physical ability to do certain tasks
Supportive devices
Devices that help to stabilize a weak body part
Contractures
A joint held in the same position for too long causing tendons to shorten and stiffen (possible permanent loss of joint motion)
Occupational therapy
Focuses on helping patient maintain or regain skills needed for everyday life
Speech-language pathology
Focuses on helping patient maintain or regain ability to communicate, chew, and swallow
Emotional rehabilitation
Helps patient learn to cope with losses caused by the disability
