Bls purpose
Prevent respiratory and/or cardiac arrest

Heart attack cause
Blood vessels that supply heart’s muscular later become blocked
Stroke cause
Blocked or ruptured blood vessel in the brain and causes lack of oxygen
Stroke symptoms
Unconscious Confused Slurs in speech Drooling Drooping on one side face Sudden severe headache Numb or weakness in arm, leg, or one side face Change in vital signs
Syncope
Fainting
Seizure cause
Occurs when electrical brain activity is interrupted
Nurse report if patient faints

Seizure protocol
Move furniture and gently rest patient on floor
Protect head using pillow or towel and call for help
Do not place anything in mouth
Provide quiet and warm environment after seizure is over
Put patient on side in (recovery position)
Hemorrhage
Uncontrolled bleeding
Hemorrhaging protocol
1-Call for help and make sure they are lying down
2-Protect myself from bloodborne pathogens
3-Apply pressure to wound using clean supplies
4-If blood is still flowing out, raise the affected body part and apply pressure to pulse point (the pulse area)
Shock symptoms
Low blood pressure
Clammy, pale skin
Rapid breathing
Disoriented
Shock protocols
Elevate feet and lower legs
Keep person warm and calm
Call for help
Aspiration
Accidentally inhaling foreign materials into the airway
FBAO types
Partial and good airway exchange

Force object out by applying pressure to abdominal cavity

If no breathing after removal of object, then perform rescue breaths
Perform CPR if goes into cardiac arrest
Heimlich maneuver procedure
1-ask if they can breathe
2-see if coughing will dislodge it
3-call for help
4-stand behind choking person and wrap around waist
5-make fist with thumb against abdomen (above bellybutton) and grasp fist with other hand NO TUCKING THUMB
6-No pressure on ribs or sternum
7-Pressure inward and upward while using fists
8a-if object removed then comfort and follow nurse orders
8b-if coughs then wait to see removal
8c-if loses conscious then lay on floor and perform rescue breaths
9-Doctor evaluates
