Ch24 Assisting With Nutrition Flashcards
Nutrition steps (4)
Ingestion (intake), digestion (breaking down AKA nutrients), absorption (digestive tract to bloodstream), metabolism (conversion of nutrients to energy)
Nutrition definition
The process of taking in and using food
Nutrients
Substances in foods and fluids that the body uses to grow, repair, and carry chemical processes essential for living
The six nutrients
Carbohydrates, proteins, fat, minerals, vitamins, and water
What do carbs do?
Supply us with glucose. Extra carbs are stored in liver, changed to fat, or stored elsewhere.
What does glucose do?
Cells absorb glucose from bloodstream and uses it as energy.
What does protein do?
Help rebuild tissue after having an illness or injury as well as rebuild after breakdown from normal use
What do fats do?
Provide energy and help our body function properly such as dissolving vitamins so the body can use it. Fat also protects organs and keep us warm
What do vitamins do?
Chemicals that help regulate the body’s processes.
What do minerals do?
Help provide structure within body and work with vitamins to regulate body processes.
Glucose definition
The body’s most basic type of fuel
