Ch9 Antimicrobial Chemotheraphy Flashcards
Selective toxicity
Agent kills or inhibits pathogen while not damaging host cells and tissue
Therapeutic index
Ratio of toxic dose to therapeutic dose
Semi synthetic product
Antibiotic or anti microbial agent whose structure is slightly modified ( chem groups altered)
Spectrum of activity
Range of bac a compound is effective against
Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC)
Lowest any that will prevent growth
Narrow spectrum drugs
Effective against small range of pathogens
Broad spectrum drug
Effective against a wide range of pathogens
Kirby Bauer test
Filter paper disks w/ antibiotic placed over bacterial lawn. Clear area around = effective compound
E test
Strip with gradient of antibiotic []. Shows MIC at the bottom of tear shaped zone
Sulfonamides
Antimicrobial drug that inhibits folic acid synthesis by competing with PABA. Effective against bacteria and some protozoa
Penicillin Cephalosporins Vancomycin
antibiotics that interfere with cell wall synthesis. Cidal
Disrupts cell wall synthesis
Targeting tranglycossylase (can’t attach Nag & Nam) and transpeptidase ( no cross link)
Bac resistance to penicillin
Enzyme lactamase targets beta lactation ring
Vancomycin
Drug of last resort for MRSA. Binds d Alanyl-d Alanyl site to prevent transpeptidase from forming cross link
Targeting bacterial ribosomes
Antibiotics that interfere with protein synthesis
