Explain what causes low milk supply and what should be recommended to increase the women milk supply.
A
- Low milk supply is usually caused by infrequent breastfeeding or inefficient emptying of the breast.
- This can be caused by a poor latch or improper positioning. Stress can also inhibit oxytocin and lactogen, it is important to adopt relaxation and resting techniques.
- It’s recommended nursing every 2-3 hours during the day and 1 at night. the mother may need to pump after breastfeeding to improve supply. A galactagogue may be prescribed to increase milk supply.

A pre-term infant. How does infants affect milk supply and what should you recommend to help increase supply of milk.
A
- Milk production relies of suckling stimulation. Late-preterm infants may not be able to stimulate the breast enough to produce adequate milk.
- The mother should pump after each feeding or every 3 hours to build milk supply. Waking a sleepy baby every 2-4 hours to avoid late-preterm breastfeeding cascade. Important to have help in positioning, sucking problems and other issues.
