CH5 medina Flashcards
Describe the arrival of the messenger of Allah in Madina.
Madina was originally known as Yathrib but became known as Madina an Nabi after the hijrah. Most of the residents of Yathrib were Jews, from the Was tribe and from the Khazraj tribe. The war of Buath weakened the tribes and they became submissive to the Jews. After the messengers arrival, the 2 tribes reconciled and they were given the tile Al Ansar by the messager which means the helpers.
How did Islam first spread in al Madina?
When some pilgrims came from Medina to perform hajj the messenger went to Mina to preach. This particular year was in the 11th year of prophethood. Six individuals from the Khazraj tribe approached him and he invited them to accept Islam. They recognised him as the messenger the Jews had been waiting for therefore they embraced Islam. On returning to Medina they introduced Islam to their families.
How many pledges of allegiance were there at Aqbah? Describe them.
There were 2 pledges of allegiance.
After the 6 pilgrims returned to Madina, the following year 12 people came to al aqbah and accepted Islam. This was the first pledge. They took Musab ibn Umar back to Madina to help teach Islam. Islam spread very quickly after this with 2 people accepting it every day.
The second pledge took place in the 13th year of prophethood. 72 people accepted Islam at the hand of Muhammad. They invited him to Makkah but Sayyiduna Abbas declined. The messenger appointed 12 leaders, 9 from Khazraj and 3 from Was. The Quraysh were furious about this pledge and tried to stop them from returning but were unable to do so.
Describe the emigration to Madina.
When madina became a safe place muhammad told whoever wanted to immigrate that they could do so. He stayed behind with Abu Bakr and Ali, waiting for Allahs command. Sayyiduna A bu Salma was the first immigrant.
Initially the kuffar were happy to see the Muslims leave until they realised that thew Muslims would mobilise an army and attack them. The kuffar of the quraysh held a meeting which iblis attended in the form of an old man. They agreed that one man of each tribe would kill Muhammad. This incident has been mentioned in Surah anfal.
Allah sent jibril to the prophet to tell him to emigrate to madina that night so Ali lay in his bed pretending to be the messenger. The messenger escaped through a miracle of sprinklng sand on the soldiers waiting outside his home. Abu Bakr and Muhammad escaped with 2 camels.
Describe the incident of the cave.
The night after leaving Makkah Muhammad and Abu Bakr rested in the cave of Thawr. The messenger fell asleep in the lap of Abu Bakr. A snake bit the foot of Abu Bakr and Muhammad healed it with his blessed saliva. Allah places a guard of safety with a spider web and a pigeon’s nest at the entrance to protect them from the kuffar. After 3 days they left the cave of Thawr and continued on their way. The kuffar put out a bounty of 100 camels for the one who found them but they were already out of reach.
Who was Umm Mabad?
She was an old woman who would offer water and food to travellers. The goat of this lady was too weak to give milk but the prophet performed a miracle in which she was able to give milk. Because of this, Umm Mabad and her family accepted Islam.
Who was Suraqah?
He was a horseman who attempted to attack the messenger after he left Umm Mabads house. In attempting to attack the messenger, Muhammad’s dua made the horse sink knee-deep into the ground. Surqah left the messenger but asked for a document to ensure his safety and was given one.
How did Buraydah accept Islam?
70 riders of Banu Hashim waited outside Madina for the messenger committed to capturing him. As soon as Buraydah saw his face, he accepted Islam.
Who was Sayyiduna Zubayr?
He was the cousin of the messenger who was met on the journey. He gave the prophet clothes as a gift.
When did Muhammad, peace be upon him enter medina?
The messenger entered the city of Quba on 12th Rabial awal. The messenger stayed at the house of sayidduna Kulthum. The Ansar would come from all over to visit the messenger of Allah.
