- effusion ( fluid around the joint) IE. pus, blood
-imaging: MRI IE. MR angiogram , arthocentesis (needle and fluid sent to la), arthroscope (camera to look inside the joint)

-checking muscle tone or strength
Electromyography: 2 needles inserted into muscle to measure muscle activity
