Ch22 Chemical Analysis Flashcards
Define qualitative (analysis):
The process used to determine the presence/absence of a substance in a given sample
Define cation:
A positive ion that would be attracted to the cathode in electrolysis
Define states symbols:
Symbols used to show the physical state of the reactants and products in a chemical reaction
s - solid
l - liquid
g - gas
aq - in solution in water
Define precipitate:
An insoluble salt formed during a precipitation reaction
Define precipitation reaction:
A reaction in which an insoluble salt is prepared from solutions of two suitable soluble salts
Define quantitative (analysis):
The process used to determine the amount/percentage of a substance in a given sample
Define acid-base titration:
A method of quantitative, chemical analysis when an acid is added slowly to a base until it has been neutralized
Define titre:
The volume of solution added from the burette during a titration
Define indicator:
A substance that changes color when added to acidic/alkaline solutions
Ex litmus/ thymolphthalein
