Ch14 Metallic Elements And Alloys Flashcards
Define electrical conductivity:
The ability to conduct electricity
Define malleability:
The ability of a substance to be bent/beaten into shape
Define ductility:
The ability of a substance to be drawn out into a wire
Define thermal conductivity:
The ability to conduct heat
Define sonorous:
A word to describe a metallic substance that rings like a bell when hit with a hammer
Define alloys:
Mixtures of elements (usually metals) designed to have the properties useful for particular purpose
Ex. solder (an alloy of tin and lead) has a low melting point
Define brass:
An alloy of copper and zinc, this alloy is hard
Define stainless steel:
An alloy of iron that resists corrosion
The steel contains a significant proportion of chromium which results in the alloy being resistant to rusting
