Homeostasis
The internal environment needed to allow cells to survive.
Skin
- Primary organ of the integumentary system
- The largest organ of the body.
Dermatology
The study of the skin - it’s structure, functions, disorders, and diseases.
Hypodermis
- Subcutaneous layer
- A fatty layer of loose connective tissue that attaches the skin to muscle and bone.
- Insulates against heat and cold.
Dermis
- The most complex layer of the skin
- Contains blood vessels, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, and sweat glands.
Hair follicles
Small sacs of epidermal ells in the dermis.
Sebaceous glands
Produce an oily secretion called sebum which moisturizes the skin and helps keep it soft and flexible.
Sweat Glands
Helps regulate body temperature.
Sensory receptors
Nerve endings in the dermis.
Epidermis
The skin’s outer later
Pathogens
Disease-causing organisms.
Cuticle
- A layer of dead cells at the base of the nail
- Helps prevent disease-causing bacterial from entering your body.
Plaque
A sticky, colorless film of harmful bacteria
Halitosis
Bad-smelling breath
Malocclusion
A condition in which the teeth of the upper and lower jaws do not aline properly.
