Ch19 monera (prokaryotae) Flashcards
autotrophic bacteria
bacteria capable of making their own food using energy
photosynthetic bacteria
bacteria that use sunlight to make their own food
chemosynthetic bacteria
bacteria that are capable of making their own food using energy from a chemical reaction
heterotrophs
are organisms which are not capable of making their own food
saprophytes
organisms which get thier food from dead organisms commonly called decomposers
symbiotic organisms
organisms of one species that live in close relationship with a second species where at least one organism benefits
parasitism
where two organisms of different species live together, where one benefits and causes harm to the other
pathogens
disease-causing organisms
antibiotics
chemicals produced by micro-organisms thata re toxic to bacteria
sterile
free from all microbes
asepsis
means excluding microbes from as much of the environment as possible
bioreactor
a vessel (usually large) in which cells, organisms or enzymes are placed to manufacture specific products
continuous flow method
of production involved maintaining the microbes in the log phase of growth by the addition of fresh medium
batch flow method
of production is when a fixed amount of nutrients are added to a bioreactor which is emptied of its contents at the end of production
