Ch18 Homeostasis Flashcards
In terms of mechanisms of hormonal coordination, explain why the blood glucose level of a healthy person returns to normal level after a period of time?
When chemoreceptors in the pancreas detect an increase in the blood glucose level, it stimulates the pancreas to produce more insulin and less glucagon. insulin stimulates body cells to take up more glucose from the blood and consume more glucose for respiration. Insulin also stimulates liver cells and muscle cells to convert more glucose into glycogen for storage.
High GI and low GI
Easily digested resulting in rapid increase in blood glucose levels
Takes more time to digest them into glucose. The chance of glucose levels becoming high is reduced
Diabetic patient should take in complex carbohydrates. Explain.
It takes time for starchy food to be digested before absorption. As a result, a small amount of glucose is absorbed gradually. Blood glucose level will not increase too fast after a normal meal.
Diabetic patients should take in sugar when hypoglycaemia occurs explain
Sugar is easily absorbed
Blood glucose level can be raised immediately to alleviate the symptoms of hypoglycaemia
Explain why a diabetic patient may suffer from hypoglycaemia if he has taken more exercise than usual
Diabetic patient does not have enough insulin in the body cells and muscle cells fail to convert excess glucose into glycogen for storage. During intense exercise, more blood glucose is consumed for muscle activities. The blood glucose level drops continuously without glycogen supply.
Homeostasis definition
Maintenance of a relatively constant internal environment in an organism.
Negative feedback mechanism
Once the system have any changes will give a command to bring the system return to the normal level
