Ch14 - Intelligence Flashcards
WAIS: Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale
An IQ test with a multitude of subtests which, in theory, quantify different areas of intelligence
Ravens progressive matrices
a largely nonverbal method of assessing IQ via testing a person’s ability to recognize and complete patterns
reliability vs validity
and in relation to IQ tests
reliability: the consistency of a measurement
- IQ tests have strong test-retest reliability
validity: whether a test measures the intended variable
- current IQ tests have decent predictive validity in that the correlation coefficient between IQ scores and GPA is roughly 0.5
general vs specialized intelligence
general (g): a capacity thaty proves an advantage on virtually any mental task
specialized: excelling at a specific skill without assessing all cognitive skills (eg: great memory skills)
Factor Analysis
a method of analyzing IQ tests, searching for common measures of intelligence in the hopes to define general intelligence and give individuals a ‘g’ score to represent this general IQ
