Ch 8 Test Flashcards
Process by which a cell surrounds and takes in material from its environment
Endocytosis
Movement of materials from a region of lower concentration to a region of higher concentration but the cell must use energy
Active transport
Expulsion or secretion of material from a cell
Exocytosis
The passive transport of materials across the plasma membrane with the aid of transport proteins
Facilitated diffusion
Concentration of solution = inside and outside cell
Isotonic solution
Concentration of solution –> more inside cell, less outside
Hypertonic
Concentration of solution –> more outside cell, less inside
Hypotonic
The diffusion of water across a selectively permeable membrane
Osmosis
Cell uses no energy to move certain particles across the membrane
Passive transport
Anaphase
3rd stage
The separation of sister chromatids
The centromeres split apart and chromatid pairs from each chromosome separated from each other
Sequence of growth and division of a cell
Cell cycle
Cell membrane divides
Cytokinesis
Interphase
- Cell grows and protein production is high
- The cell copies its chromosomes
- Mitochondira and other organelles are manufactured and cell parts needed for cell division are assembled
Metaphase
The spindle fibers attach themselves to the centromeres of the chromosomes and align the chromosomes at the middle of the cell
Prophase
The dna molecules are progressively shortened and condensed by coiling to form visible chromosomes.
Enzymes break down the nuclear membrane and nucleolus so they are no longer visible.
Spindle fibers form which will attach to the chromosomes.
