Ch 8 Permanent Canines: Max and Mand Flashcards
-cornerstones of mouth -longest teeth in mouth -strong, "self-cleansing," guidepost for prosthesis -resemble to prehensile teeth of carnivore -"canine eminence"- have a cosmetic value ensures normal facial expression -effiecient function, stability (anchorage), maintain natural expression
Max Canine General Info
- cusp has mesial incisal ridge, distal incisal ridge
- mesial resembles portion of an incisor, distal resembles premolar
- incising portion is thicker labiolingually than that of either the max cent or lat I
- labioling crown 1mm > max CI, mesiodistal mm < max CI
- cingulum, greater dev’t
- longest root
(Max) Detailed Labial:
- mesial
- distal
- cusp tip
- surface
- root
crown and root narrower mesiodistally, convexity toward root
- convex from cervix to CA, resembles incisor
- concave bet cervical line and distal CA. Resembles premolar
- on line w/ center of root
- mesial slope > distal slope, tendency towards concavity
- smooth, shallow depressions into 3 labial lobes: mesial, middle, distal
- ridge, inclined mesially, exhibiting convexity. Distally, concavity at cervical third. - slender, conical, blunted pointed apex
- sharp curvature near apex, distal direction
- smooth, convex surface
(Max) Detailed lingual:
- cervical
- cingulum
- ridges
crown and root narrower lingually
- shows more even curvature
- large, pointed like a small cusp
- ridges found w/ depressions in between, w/ shallow concavities. (forming mesial/distal lingual fossae
- well developed lingual ridges
(Max) Detailed Mesial:
- crown outline
- labial
- lingual
- cervical
- root
- mesial
greater bulk and greater labioling measurement
- wedge-shaped. functional form of anteriors but labiolingually
- exhibits more convexity from the cervical line to the cusp tip
- convex cingulum, straightens at middle third, bcoming convex at incisal third
- curves toward cusp by 2.5 mm
- conical, tapered or bluntly pointed apex. may curve labially or almost perpendicular
- convex, except above CA where it concave and flat
(Max) Detailed Distal
- cervical
- distal
- surface
- developemental depression
- less curvature toward cusp
- marginal ridges heavier, more irregular in outline
- more concavity about CA
- more pronounced
(Max) Detailed Incisal
- cusp tip
- mesial
- crown
- ridge of middle labial lobe
- cingulum
labioling > mesiodistal
- labial to center of crown labiolingually and mesial to center mesiodistally
- stresses the proportion of crown mesidistaly and labiolingually
- long axis of root, directly in line of vision - gives impression of having the entire distal portion stretched to make contact w/ 1st premolar
- noticeable, greatest convexity at cervical third of crown. becomes broader and flatter at the middle and incisal third
- cervical third of crown lingual
- makes up the center of the crown lingually
- shorter arc makes up the outline
- lali section from the center of crown will show an evenly bisected root, w/ the M part narrower than distal
- M shows greater LaLi bulk
- D appears stretched to make contact w/ premolar
- line bisecting cusp is MD represents arc of M and DCA
- arcs can be drawn perfectly w/ aid of French curve
Mandibular Canine General Info
- crown
- root
- lingual
- cingulum
- cusp
- narrower mesiodistally
- shorter
- labioling 1mm <
- smoother
- less developed, less bulk to marginal ridges
- not well developed, ridges are thinner labioling
- tip: lies on a line w/ the center of root, sometimes lies lingual to line on M and D aspect
*variation in bifurcated roots
(Mand) Detailed Labial
- crown
- mesial
- cusp ridges
- distal CA
- cervical line
- root
1mm < max C mesiodistally
- appears longer becoz of narrowness of crown mesiodistally and height of CA above cervix
- straight
- shorter, on center w/ root
- cusp angle is on a line w/ the center of the root like max
- mesial cusp ridge shorter
- toward incisal
- semicircular curvature apically
- bent distally
- shorter by 1mm-2mm
(Mand) Detailed Lingual
- cingulum
- marginal ridges
- root
flatter crown surface, smaller and regular
- smooth, poor developed
- less distinct
- lingual ridge not distinct except toward cusp tip where it is raised
- narrower
(Mand) Detailed Mesial
- Lingual
- Cingulum
- incisal
- cusp
- cervical
- root
less curvature labially < 0.5mm
- curved in same manner as max
- not pronounced
- thinner, labiolingually, allowing for pointed appearance of crown
- more pointed, ridge slender
- curves toward incisal
- similar, dev’tal depression more pronounced and deep
- tip centered over root
- more pointed
* may have bifuricated root
(Mand) Detailed Distal
little difference
(Mand) Detailed Incisal
- mesiodistal < labiolingual
- outlines of mesial surfaces less curved
- cusp and mesial cusp ridge more inclined in ling direction
- DCR and CA prominent
Variations
1. Natural
- # of lobes making up the completed form of the crown
- form and contour of each lobe
- arrangement of lobe
- relation of one lobe bears to another
Variations
2. Developmental
- produced during calcification of crown within jaw bones
- causes
a. mechanical interference: disturbance in deposition of enamel
b. intraosseous pressure-may have similar effect as mechanical
c. endemic disease-influences cell metabolism (scarlet fever, typhoid, measles)
Variations
3. Acquired
brought about oral environment, such as abrasion, attrition, erosion or caries
