APD Previously referred to as sociopathy
• Pervasive pattern of disregard for, and violation of, the rights of others that begins in
childhood or early adolescence and continues into adulthood
• Psychopathy is defined by the above, but also differs
• Psychopathy is not a formal diagnosis
• Psychopathy is more neurobiologically originating, APD is more socioenvironmentally
originating
• Though they share symptoms, they are not identical; and, psychopathy is considered
an extreme manifestation of APD.
• Neither are necessarily result in criminality, but are substantially associated
with it.
Baseline
• Baseline attitude, mood, interaction
style, method of relation—perceiveable
usually state of an infant.
• Dispositions determined largely by
genetics and biology
• How we approach and interact with
our social environment influences
how that environment will interact
with us

Predisposition acts as resistant or catalyzing to the biologically
predisposed temperament:
• Attachment style (secure, avoidant, anxious/ambivalent)
• Parental style (authoritarian, permissive, authoritative, negligent)
• In-Utero Experiences
