What is ethics?
The set of theories or principles that determines right and wrong. The systematic study of the values guiding our decision making.
What does ethics reflect?
how we believe people should behave and how we want the world to operate
What are morals?
the fundamental baseline values that dictate appropriate behavior within a society
What is morality?
a list of actions people ought to do or refrain from doing
What dissuades humans from immoral or unethical behavior?
consequences
What are the two criteria for discipline?
meaningful and enforceable
What is ethical dilemma and how do we solve it?
practical conflict involving equally compelling values or social obligations; solved when we articulate which commonly held values we admire most
What is a value?
something we judge to be worthwhile, desirable, excellent, and important
What are the two main approaches when handling ethical dilemmas?
practical consequences and actions
What are the three steps to solving an ethical dilemma?
analyze the consequences, analyze the actions, and make a decision
What does Step 1: Analyze the consequences consist of?
assume you have a variety of options; consider the range of both positive and negative consequences connected with each one
What does Step 2: Analyze the Actions consist of?
Do any of the actions that you’re considering “cross the line,” in terms of anything rom simple decency to an important ethical principle?
What is utilitarianism?
a system of ethics according to which the rightness or wrongness of an action should be judged by its consequences.
What is the goal of utilitarian ethics?
promote the greatest happiness for the greatest number
What does relativism?
- there is no standard of right or wrong, it depends on the situation
- no one has the right to make moral judgements; no one should judge others concerning right or wrong
- right and wrong are unknowable because of different societies and cultures
