Ch 6 - Lec 1 Gases Flashcards
Three types of gases
Elemental (noble and monatomic), diatomic, molecular (usually non metallic with low molecular masses)
Properties of gases (4)
Expand to fill the container, compressible, homogenous mixtures (regardless of identity or properties), molecules and atoms of gases take up about .1% of the total volume (mostly empty space)
Force per unit area that the gas exerts on a surface
Pressure
Pressure equation
P=force/area
Units of pressure
Pascal
Atmospheric pressure is
1x10^5 Pa
Measures atmospheric pressure
Barometer
Pressure of something in a manometer formula
Pgas=Patm+h
Gas law of volume and pressure
V=1/P
Gas law for temperature and volume equation
V=T
Gas law that relates volume and moles (n)
V=n
The ideal gas equation
PV=nRT
Hypothetical gas whose behavior follows the IGE
Ideal gas
The gas constant is
R
The gas constant is
.08206 Latm/molesK
