Ch 3 Lec 2 - Chemical Compounds Flashcards
7 rules for oxidation states
- free element must have ox state of 0
- sum of ox states must add up to 0 or the total charge on the molecule
- group 1 metals have ox states of +1, group 2 metals have ox states of +2
- Ox state of fluorine is -1.
- H usually has oxidation state of +1
- O usually has ox state of -2
- in binary compounds with metals, group 17 elements have ox states of -1, group 16 has -2, group 15 has -3
metal and nonmetal (ionic) compounds are blank
binary
to name an inorganic compound unmodified name of blank + nonmetal modified to end in blank
metal, -ide
do not use blank to denote subscripts in naming inorganic compounds
prefixes
NaCl name
sodium chloride
Al2O3
Aluminum oxide
some blank metals can form more than one type of ion
transition
seven transition metals that can form more than one type of ion
Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Hg, Sn, Pb
with transition metals that form more than one type of ion use a blank for the oxidation state after the metal name in parenthesis
roman numeral
FeCl3
Iron (III) chloride
FeCl2
Iron (II) chloride
CuO
copper (II) oxide
gold is also a special blank
inorganic compound
two nonmetal elements are also a blank compound

binary acid
to name a binary acid add blank prefix before the name of the nonmetal and modify to end with blank
hydro-, -ic
name HCL (aq)
