Ch. 5 Binding Theory Flashcards
R-expression
An NP that gets it meaning by referring to an entity in the world
Anaphor
An NP that obligatorily gets it meaning from another NP in the sentence.
Pronoun
An NP that may (but need not) gets its meaning from another NP in the sentence.
Antecedent
The element that binds a pronoun, anaphor, or R-expression. When this element c-commands another coindexed NP, it is a binder of the NP.
Index
A subscript mark that indicates what an NP refers to
Coindexed
Two NPs that have the same index
Corefer
Two NPs that are coindexed
Binding
A binds B if and only if A c-commands B and A and B are coindexed. A is the binder , B is in the bindee.
Locality Constraint
A constraint on the grammer, such that two syntactic entites must be “local” or near to one another.
Binding Domain
The clause (for our Purposes).
Free
not bound
Binding Principle A
An anaphor must be bound in its binding domain
Binding Principle B
A pronoun must be free in its binding domain
Binding Principle C
An R-expression must be free.
