Does single sex education reinforce gender stereotypes? Teaching to stereotypes rather than gender
Eliminating Gender Bias
Parents and teachers treat boys differently than girls
Boys reinforced for intellectual pursuits, girls for nuturing activities
Teachers more frequently attribute failure in boys to lack of maturity, while girls more frequently seen as lacking ability
Sexual harrassment
Many different forms:
- sexist remarks
- covert physical contact
- blatant propositions
- sexual assaults
Quid Pro Quo
School employee threatens to base an education decision (grades) on a student’s submission to unwelcome sexual conduct
Hostile Environment
A student is subjected to unwelcome sexual conduct so severe and pervasive that it limits educational experiences
Prejudice
An unjustified, negative or harmful attitude towards a member of a group because a person belongs to that group
