Ch. 4: Applied Functional Anatomy of the Airway Flashcards
Nasal Passage
Avoid Kiesselbach’s plexus medially.
Floor angles down 15 degrees. Follow it.
Cocaine is anesthetic and vasoconstricting.
Can open passage by 50%
Do NOT force NT tube at the back of the NP. Can cause tear into a false passage submucosally.
Do not use NT intubation w maxillary fractures.
Mouth
Pharynx
Mandible-tongue-hyoid-epiglattis. Jaw thrust pulls
epiglottis anterior.
Opening the mouth allows more effective jaw thrust.
Pharynx is tube from base of skull to esophagus.
Benzos can reduce tone and convert partial obstruction to complete obstruction.
NMB can worsen the view in obese and pregnant.
Glossopharygeal nn can be blocked and numb posterior tongue and epiglottis.
Larynx
Trachea
Larynx is heavily innervated and stimulation can double HR and BP.
CTM is about the size of pinkie. 6-8mm
ETT for male 8.5 and women 7.5
