Ch. 3 Anatomy, Physiology, & Pathology Of The Breast Flashcards
Is the milk producing element of the breast, located within the alveolar glands
Acinus
Is an adjunctive therapy involving the use of drugs to treat cancer that may have spread throughout the body
Chemotherapy
Are also called suspensory ligament. They are strands of connective tissue that runs between the skin and the facia to support the lobes of the breast
Coopers ligaments
A common condition and females were the breast develops thickening of the alveoli in addition to one or more cysts
Fibrocystic breast
The most inferior aspect of the breast where it meets the anterior abdominal wall
Inframammary fold or crease
Describes a process that begins at menopause as the breast loses its support of tissue to fat, to produce a smaller breast or a larger, more pendulous one
Involution
A syndrome that occurs in males due to them having 47 chromosomes. The symptoms are in large breast, small testes, sparse facial and body hair, and inability to produce sperm.
Klinefelter’s syndrome
Are ducts within the breast conveying milk to the nipple
Lactiferous ducts
Is a widening or ampulla in the connecting duct immediately behind the nipple orifice
Lactiferous sinus
Is a broad triangular muscle located on the inferior part of the back
Latissimus dorsi muscle
Is also called the terminal duct your lobular unit. It lies at the end of the branching tree of ducts. Holds the alveolar glands, which are the milk producing elements of the breast
Lobule
A small kidney shaped organ, which is part of the lymphoid tissue. Or seen Mammographically as ovoid structures with a Lucent center or hilum
Lymph nodes
Large modified sebaceous glands on the areola of the breast that secrete a fatty fluid that lubricates and protects the nipple during nursing. They also have smooth muscles that caused the nipples to become erect when stimulated
Montgomery’s glands
Refer to protrusions on the nipple
Morgagni’s tubercles
Refers to treatment used to relieve or alleviate the pain or symptoms of a disease without actually curing the disease
Palliative treatment
Is an area of fatty tissue separating the breast from the pectoral muscle
Retromammary space
Are oil secreting glands in the skin
Sebaceous glands
The outer upper quadrant of the breast which extends towards the axilla
Tale of Spence
Is the most distal end of the ductal system
Terminal ductal lobular unit (TDLU)
What are the upper lower medial and lateral extents of the breast
Upper- 2nd or 3rd rib
Lower- 6th or 7th rib
Medial- mid sternum
Lateral- mid axillary line(latissimus dorsi muscle)
Where does most of the breasts blood supply come from?
Axillary artery
