ch 3 Flashcards
PNS
everything outside of brain and spinal cord
sensory neuron
afferent, receives info (PNS–> CNS)
interneuron
transfer of info between neurons
ex. spinal cord in between motor an sensory neurons
motor neuron
effector (efferent), CNS–> PNS, muscles, glands
motor neuron death=?
paralysis etc.
glial cells (glue?)
glial cells and neurons make up nervous system
altroglia
creates blood-brain barrier to protect brain from viruses etc.
oligodendroglia
provides myelin sheath
microglia
cleans up dead cells and prevents infection in brain
4 main functions of glial cells
- surround neurons and hold them in place
- supply nutrients and oxygen to neurons
- insulate one neuron from another
- destroy and remove dead neurons
where are glial cells
both CNS and PNS
nodes of ranvier
speeds up action potential, gaps in myelin sheath
myelin sheath
protective
major neurotransmitters
Serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, glutamate, GABA, Acetylcholine (Ach)
glutamate
(function and associated drugs)
-learning and memory, movement, emotions, cognition
-ketamine
