General adaptation syndrome consists of 3 stages.
Alarm reaction: similar to fight or flight response
Resistance stage: works on defending self while still alarmed.
Exhaustion stage: when the body’s resources are depleted from an extended period of resistance to stressors.

Prevent or reduce stressors
“Normal line of defence”
Prevention strategies:
Primary - promote wellness by stress prevention/reduce risk factors
Secondary - occurs after symptoms appear
Tertiary - begins when patient more stable/recovering
Health promotion model (Pender et al., 2002)
Proposes that health promotion is directed toward increasing the level of well-being of an individual or group
Avoidance of negative events
Stress-reduction strategies
