Ch. 26 (urinary system) SG Flashcards
Urinary system
performs vital excretory functions and eliminates the organic waste products generated by cells in the body
Kidneys
they perform the excretory functions of this system; they produce urine, located in the lateral vertebral column; the left kid sits somewhat superior to the right kidney on the opposite side; ureter connects the bladder and kidneys togther
Path of urine
Starts in the glomerulus which is in the renal corpuscle, then bowman’s capsule, proximal convuluted tubule, loop of henle, distal convuluted tubule, collecting duct, minor and then major calyx, renal pelvis, ureter, bladder, urethra, external urethral sphincter
Bood flow thru kidney
Starts with renal artery, segmental arteries, interlobar arteries, arcuate arteries, cortical radiate arteries, interlobular veins, arcuate veins, interlobar veins, and then renal vein
Nephron
basic functional unit of the kidney; see page 102 for picture
juxtaglomerular apparatus
aka juxtaglomerular complex; endocrine structure created by macula densa, juxtaglomerular cells, and extraglomerular mesangial cells that secretes 2 hormones (renin and erythropoietin)
Epithelium of the bladder
mucosa of transitional epithelium, submucosa, and muscularis layers; needed to compress the detrusor muscle in the bladder; located outside peritoneal cavity and lies between rectum and pubis symphysis
