Bacterial endocarditis
Infections of heart valves or inner surface of heart. Fever, loss of energy over weeks.
Caused by staph epidermis
Can develop after dental procedure. Ppl at risk are those with congenital heart defects.
Antibiotics
Sepsis shock
Release of gram negative bacteria, causing excessive damaging response. Dramatic drop in blood pressure.
Plague
Large lymph nodes called buboes. Bloody sputum.
Mononucleosis
Caused by ebv. Spread by saliva.
Dengue fever
Mosquito born viral disease. Often asymptomatic.
Dss- weak rapid pulse, clotting, gi and vaginal bleeding
Malaria
Recurrent cycles of chills and fever and feeling healthy.
Caused by 5 species of Protozoa of the genus plasmodium.
Bite from anopheles mosquito
Meningitis
Mild cold followed by headache, vomiting, stiff neck and back.
Carried to meninges and spinal fluid
Listeriosis
Prior to meningitis. Contaminated foods.
Caused by listeria monocytogens
Hansen’s disease
Caused by mycobacterium leprae
Skin lesions, deformed face, loss of fingers and toes.
Nasal secretions
Botulism
Not nervous system infection. It is an intoxication
Blurred or double vision, weakness, nausea, vomiting, paralysis.
Can be food born or intestinal. Wound or infant.
Polio
Virus infect throat and intestine circulates blood stream. Eneters nerve cells and brain and spinal cords
Spread by fecal oral route
Rabies
Can happen 30-60 days after. Caused by single stranded rna rabies virus.
Vaginosis
Common in child bearing years. Yeast infection.
Tss
Caused by staph aureus. Fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, low blood pressure.
