muscles create
movement at wrist and fingers
Colle’s fracture
mech: FOOSH. S&S: dinner fork deformity, posterior movement of radius. MGMT: refer for x-ray
Smith’s fracture
radial fracture, anterior displacement
Barton’s fracture
intra-articular fracture
ulnar/radial fracture
open/closed caused by direct blow
Carpal tunnel syndrome
mech: repetitive gripping/motion, compression of median nerve. S&S: numbness/tingling in hand, weakened grip. MGMT: ice, NSAIDS, injection, surgery
lunate fracture
mech: FOOSH. Lunate is at base of 3rd finger, dislocates to the palm side. Check for Murphy’s sign, when the 3rd knuckle drops.
Hamate fracture
Mech: contact with sport’s equipment (bat/helmet etc.) Hamate is at base of 5th finger
Scaphoid fracture
FOOSH, most frequently fractured of carpal bones. Scaphoid is at base of thumb. anatomical snuffbox. avascular necrosis can occur, extending the healing time.
Boxer’s fracture
fracture of 5th metacarpal from a compressive force. pain, swelling, deformity. NSAIDS, ice, surgery
Mallet finger
distal extensor tendon avulsion.
boutonniere deformity
proximal extensor tendon avulsion
Jersey finger
flexor digitorum tendon avulsion, surgery necessary.
which fingernail deformity results from thyroid problems
Spooning
a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament of the MCP joint of the thumb, caused by forceful abduction of the proximal phalanx is called
