Ch 23 The Elbow Flashcards
Radius
thumb side
ulna
pinky side
ulnar collateral ligament
prevents valgus forces
radial collateral ligament
prevents varus forces
annular ligament
resists RCL, holds radial head in place
biceps brachii
flexion
triceps brachii
extension
elbow joint
hinge joint allowing extension, flexion, supination and pronation
what assists in stability?
capsule and bony structure
carrying angle
when palms face forward, females, 10-15. males 5 deg
elbow contusion
Mech: direct repetitive blows. S&S: swelling, possible loss of movement. MGMT: RICE, NSAIDS, monitor for infection
ulnar collateral ligament injuries
mech: repetitive valgus forces, hyperextension. S&S:pain on inside of elbow, loss of forceful, controlled throwing, numbness/tingling. MGMT: RICE, NSAIDS, strengthening and possible surgery baseball commonly calls “Tommy John” procedure.
medial/lateral epicondylitis
Mech for medial: repetitive flexion (golf elbow). Mech for lateral: repetitive extention (tennis elbow). S&S: inflammation, painful gripping/movement. MGMT: modalities, NSAIDS, strengthening.
young athlete problems
osteochondritis dissecans, Panner’s disease, Little league elbow
osteochondritis dissecans
Joint mice. Mech= unknown, possible repetitive motion. loose bodies in joint. 10-15 years
Panner’s disease
form of osteochondritis dissecans occuring in those younger than 10, where avascular necrosis may occur
Little league elbow
Mech: repetitive throwing, variety of avulsion/apophyseal damage/stress fracture
elbow dislocation
mech: FOOSH, hyperextension, where radius and ulna move anteriorly. S&S deformity, loss of motion, MGMT: immediate referral, extensive rehabilitation.
valgus
lateral force inward
varus
medial force applied outward
the ligament that stabilizes and encircles the head of the radius is the
annular ligament
what nerve innervates the main elbow extensors?
radial nerve
a trainer applies resistance to an extended wrist while elbow is flexed to 45 deg. What injury is being tested for?
lateral epicondylitis
athlete complains of burning and tingling in 4th and 5th fingers. which structure may be damaged?
ulnar nerve
most elbow dislocations occur from falling on an outstretched hand. In what direction do the ulna and radius dislocate?
posterior
what nerve can become irritated secondary to the cubitus valgus at the elbow
ulnar
the motions that occurs at the proximal radioulnar joint are ___
pronation and supination
lateral epicondylitis occurs from
repeated extension of wrist
