Ch 24 Sources of Energy Flashcards
name three fossil fuels
coal, oil, gas
how does a coal fired power station work
- coal burns and heats water which produces steam
- steam goes through pipe and has kinetic energy which is transferred into a turbine which spins the generator
- the generator converts kinetic energy into electricity which is sent to homes via power lines
- the steam has been used to the. the turbines and it loses energy and turns back to water
name 6 renewable energy sources
solar energy, wind energy, hydroelectric power, geothermal energy, biomass, wave energy
what advantages are there to nuclear power
doesn’t add to climate change
lasts a long time
small amount of waste
what are the two ways of producing energy from the nucleus of an atom
- nuclear fission
2. nuclear fusion
explain nuclear fission
when the nucleus of the atom is bombarded with neutrons it splits into two parts. it converts its nuclear energy into heat energy
what are some problems with nuclear fission
waste from uranium is radioactive
uranium needs to be mined
radioactive material decays slowly
can cause a chain reaction
explain nuclear fusion
when two smaller nuclei combine to form one large nucleus
name three advantages of nuclear fusion
more energy produced than fission
hydrogen isotopes can be sourced easily from the ocean
no possibility of uncontrolled chain reaction
