Ch 13 Acids and Bases Flashcards
name three common everyday acids
citric acid
ascorbic acid
carbonic acidic
name 2 common laboratory acids
hydrochloric acid
sulfuric acid
what is base
the chemical opposite of an acid
name 3 common everyday based
sodium carbonate
sodium hydroxide
magnesium hydroxide
name 3 common laboratory based
sodium hydroxide
calcium carbonate
limewater
what is an alkali
a base that is soluble in water
e.g. washing powder
what is a neutral substance
a substance that doesn’t behave like an acid or a base
what is the ph scale used for
to record how concentrated an acid or an alkaline is
tell me how to ph scale works
the ph scale goes from 0 to 14
neutral = ph 7
acidic= ph below 7
alkaline= ph above 7
what is an indicator and give two example
an indicator is a substance that shows whether a solution is acid or base e.g. litmus indicator, universal indicator
what does litmus indicator do
changes colour from blue to red in acids and from red to blue in alkalis. doesn’t tell you how concentrated the substance is
what does a universal indicator do
changes colour according to how concentrated a substance is
what is neutralization
when an acid and a base react to produce salt and water
what is titration
a laboratory technique used to find out the exact volume of acid needed to neutralize a base
( diagram in book)
what is the chemical and word equation for titration
hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide»_space; sodium chloride + water
HCl + NaOH»_space;> NaCl + H2O
